Ongole/Nellore: TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Amidst high tension, the district collectors of Prakasam and Nellore put off elections for the ZP chairpersons here on Saturday .The TDP,with less than required strength in both districts, made things tough for collectors through desperate attempts to snatch the top ZP posts from YSRCP .
District collectors N Srikanth (Nellore) and Vijaya Kumar (Prakasam) initially resisted TDP pressure and tried to conduct the polls. However, the collectors adjourned the meeting and put off elections after sensing that the situation was slipping out of hands.
While YSRCP secured clear majority in both ZPs, the TDP’s poaching tactics led to stalemate in the polling process.
The YSRCP won 31 ZPTCs and TDP 25 in Prakasam ZP , which has a strength of 56.While the support of 29 members was required to win the ZP , the TDP lured three ZPTCs from the rival camp into its fold. As a result, both TDP and YSRCP ended with the support of 28 members each. With stalemate prevailing, district collector Vijaya Kumar suggested toss of coin as an option to complete the election. While YSRCP leaders agreed for the proposal, TDP wanted the election to be postponed.
With the collector refusing to toe the line, TDP cadres tried to gatecrash and enter the polling centre to stage a protest. The situation turned volatile when TDP activists attacked the police. SP Pramod Kumar reached the spot and caned protesting TDP activists led by Karanam Venkatesh, son of former MP Karanam Balaram.
YSRCP leaders alleged that TDP leaders were deliberately trying to create a law and order problem to buy time so that they can lure another member and win the ZP chief ‘s post.TDP fielded former ZP vicechairman Manne Ravindra for the top post and YSRCP fielded Nukasani Balaji.
A similar situation prevailed in Nellore, where TDP tried its best to get the elections postponed after failing to secure a majority . While the YSRCP won 36 ZPTCs, TDP won just 15 ZPTCs in the election. However, calculations changed after six ZPTCs switched sides to TDP on Saturday . Even after admitting six members, the TDP’s tally remained at 20 and the YSRCP’s tally at 31.
TRS Hits a Six Despite TDP-Cong Bouncer
HYDERABAD: Elections to the posts of chairperson and vice-chairperson of zilla parishads (ZPs) across Telangana witnessed beginning of a new “friendship” between the TDP and the Congress, traditional arch rivals.
True to the saying ‘Foe’s foe is friend’, the TDP and the Congress tried to forge friendship in some ZPs such as Warangal to prevent the ruling TRS from bagging the ZP chairman posts in the districts. However, the pink party successfully captured the ZP chairman posts in six districts, including Warangal, out of the seven districts for which indirect polls were held on Saturday.
