Party launches 10-day yatra to protest against slow pace of work on the major irrigation dam
Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh unit of the BJP, which has embarked on a 10-day Project Yatra from the Polavaram dam, has expressed its displeasure over the slow pace of work on the major irrigation project.
Despite the party trying to project it as a move to help the government, some leaders do agree that it is certainly a move that could cause some embarrassment to the TDP government
Coming down heavily on the TDP government, Vishnu Kumar Raju said the State government had done nothing with regard to Polavaram during the past one-and-half-year. It had only been blaming the Centre. So far, only 20 per cent of work had been completed and the expenditure incurred so far was only Rs 2,000 crore, he said.
According to Haribabu, their yatra was a fact-finding mission. He said the Centre had shown great speed in merging the seven mandals under Polavaram with Andhra Pradesh with a sole aim of speeding up the project works and its completion by 2019.

Irate TDP sympathisers attacked APCC president N Raghuveera Reddy and other leaders of his party at Kona near Machilipatnam on Sunday .The incident took place shortly after a Congress delegation arrived to extend support to those who have been protesting against the forcible acquisition of land for port construction.
Reports say sympathisers of the ruling party were angry because the villagers chased excise minister Kollu Ravindra and MP Konakalla Narayana on Saturday .Both the minister and the MP had to run out of the village under po lice cover when they tried to convince the farmers to part with their lands for the port.
Incensed by the humiliation, the district TDP unit reportedly asked the local party cadre to take on the visiting Congress leaders.According to information, a group of villagers stopped Raghuveera Reddy and his associates in the middle of the village on Sunday .They wondered why the Congress leaders are vitiating the atmosphere with their tours.
They asked the team to leave the village immediately , claiming that the Congress does not have moral right to slam the government’s moves. Another group opposing the land acquisition confronted their fellow villagers at this juncture, stating that it was not fair on their part to question those who had come to extend support to the oustees.
Though the PCC president averred that their motive was not to derive any political mileage, the TDP sympathisers did not allow Raghuveera to enter the village.The situation turned volatile as the two groups clashed with each other. Pebbles and stones were hurled at the Congress delegation.However, the police rescued the leaders and took them to safety.
